Balancing Stress and Recovery

Too much stress and too little recovery will compromise performance and ultimately health and wellbeing...

It’s national stress awareness week and a lot of people are talking about the consequences of not managing stress effectively. I’d like to tackle the topic of stress from a slightly different angle – the importance of balancing stress and recovery. We have to accept that we live in this fast paced modern corporate world where the demands are constant and the working hours are long and the pressures and stresses are not about to go away. Therefore if we are going to experience stressors throughout our working day we need to balance it with periods of recovery during the working day too.

Here are some of my thoughts on the importance of recovery…

I understand that when you’re stressed and overwhelmed with tight deadlines and too much to do and not enough time to do it, the temptation is to sacrifice sleep, relaxation and recovery. We view these things as expendable but they’re not, it’s the worse thing you can do for your health, your energy and ironically your ability to manage stress.

I believe our lack of routine switch off time is one of the most pressing issues in modern society and for you ability to transform stress into resilience it could hardly be more critical.

In another post I’ll share my top tips for building recovery into your working day.
